Several queries have been received in response to the notices circulating about the upcoming event for Brother Lloyd Elston.

Brother Gary Willis, who is organizing the Benevolence & Appreciation Night for Lloyd Elston, asked me to construct some background information on R.W. Bro. Elston and his current situation.

LLoyd R. Elston is 79 years old, born May 10, 1930 in Edmonton.

Brother Elston was made a Mason in 1959.  In 1988, then a member of Unity Lodge No. 51, served as District Deputy Grand Master of what is now the Yellowhead District.

As a frequent visitor, R.W. Bro. Elston developed a close relationship with Meridian Lodge.  Consequently, in February 11, 1988, Lloyd was made an “honourary member.

Listening to Meridian’s members lamenting the presence of any pillars in their Lodge, Bro. Elston undertook at on his own time and cost to construct a pair.  As per Meridian’s historic register . . .

“At the regular Lodge meeting of Wednesday, 13 September, 2000, two pillars, one for either side of the Senior Warden position, were presented to Meridian Lodge by R.W. Bro. Lloyd Elston.  (He) built these pillars himself, and what is so outstanding about them is, that part way through their construction Brother Elston suffered a stroke, causing paralysis of his right side and a severe speech impediment.  The working on the pillars turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it became a therapy for him and allowed almost complete recovery of his ability to walk.  The network for the chapiters was taken as an imprint or pattern from the pillars at Highlands-Unity Lodge No. 168 in Edmonton.”

During the last ten years, Lloyd and his wife Heleena have fallen on bad times.  Thus, Lloyd and Heleena now find themselves with limited means and resources to live.

At our Lodge meeting in September . . . an email from Heleena Harma-Elston was read out, noting that she and R.W. Bro. Lloyd are now living with their son given that “Lloyd’s mind is sort of gone and he is not able to plan or reason any longer”.

Thus, Gary Willis’ impetuous to organize this upcoming event to raise some benevolence for this once very active and very self-sufficient Mason.  Meridian Lodge is pleased to assist Gary in his efforts.
